I'm still alive, although for a while last night that was up for debate.

I'd been sitting on my bed writing in a notebook while I ran AdAware on the laptop. When it was finished, I deleted some tracking cookies (bastards), and shut off the computer.

I went back to the bed, reached for my notebook-

And there, crawling over the paragraph I'd just written, was the BIGGEST mosquito hawk I've ever seen in my life. Two, three inches at least.

So I did what any self-respecting person who was going to BED would do when they found a giant bug crawling on something they'd set on the bed.

I picked up the notebook and gave it a couple "get the fuck off" flicks, probably scaring the crap out of the bug and launching it into the air.

I only got a quick glimpse of it before I freaked and sent it on its way, and I wasn't one hundred percent sure that 1.) it was a mosquito hawk, and 2.) it could fly.

So I grabbed my handy Maglite flashlight and went on a search, CSI style. I scanned the bed and the surrounding area, but I couldn't find the damn thing. If I could have just found it, I would've either a.) killed it, or b.) more likely just caught it and tossed it outside, 'cause I try not to kill big stuff that doesn't want to hurt me. It makes kind of a mess, and- can we say ew?

I checked almost the whole apartment, in my CSI-wannabe way, except obviously my mother's room. Couldn't find it anywhere.

Which is why I spent the night on the couch in the living room. It was uncomfortable and the window was open, so every time a strand of hair got blown across my face, you know what I thought. "Eeek, yick, BUG!" Then there was the fact the wind kept blowing the blinds against the window and scaring the hell out of me. But eventually I did get to sleep. I woke up when Mom came out to get the paper.

After telling her my terrible story of woe, she helped me search my room again for the offending critter, and when we couldn't find it, I went to get some real sleep in my real bed.

So I got some sleep, interrupted by creepy dreams about big bugs, but let's not talk about that. I woke up and went online to check my email. I saw one from Mom, subject line "bug" and I thought please Gods, tell me she found the damn thing.

She did. A "HUGE mosquito hawk" (her words) crawling on her bathroom window screen. She closed the window on it. :)

I really really love my mother. :)

Ugh! After last week's (or was it the week before?) encounter with that nasty spider I totally feel with you! How come that the nastiest bugs will always show up late at night, and always somewhere close to where you sleep? Gah!

In 1979, when Hurricane David went through, I had to go to work cause I had just started with the FBI. When I got home at 2:30am, there was a big black square in my bedroom window. I got in to find a note from my parents saying, "Dear Invisible Person, the hurricane blew out your window. It'll be fixed in a couple of days."

Ok, not a problem. However, I got up to the room and saw tha piece of wood sitting in the window and all I could think of were the bees that lived in the wrought-iron eagle that was on the front of the house. All I could think was that it would be waaaaaaay too easy for them to crawl past that piece of the wood and into my room.

I slept on the couch for 3 days.
