I have found that answering the door while holding a live snake is an excellent deterrent for Jehovah's Witnesses. And lots of other pesky, uninvited folks, actually. Highly recommend this course of action. ;)
Agreed about people who ring bells and bang on doors at that hour being douches. Things like that always make me wish I had a moat.
