The fandom meme
Feb. 15th, 2004 04:28 pmOkay, so I'm bored, and I've been meaning to do this.
First Online Fandom: Star Wars. I had to think about this for a long time. There were a couple bullitan boards I haunted back in '97- met a bunch of great people. I don't know what the hell happened to most of 'em. Had a falling out with one guy who was sort of the ringleader of one group, although it's been so long I'm not even sure he remembers... Great people though. That was one group, the first actually. Then there was a group at the Bantam boards, the really old ones. (Not sure if Bantam even has boards anymore, but they sure as hell don't have Star Wars ones.)
We had fun; nobody cared what we did there, so a bunch of us wrote a fanfic. Some pretty good stuff, too... One of the characters I created ended up morphing from a kind of bitchy Dark Jedi kid into a knight in the SWG RPG (not a Jedi, a knight, with swords and stuff- long story, don't ask). Terra Davins is her name. I'm getting all nostalgic for the old Terra now, it's kind of funny. We were writing just when the names had been released for Episode I, and we didn't have any connections for them, just Padme and Shmi and Jar Jar and Darth Maul. And possibly Qui-Gon. I'm not sure if we had Qui-Gon or not. And they were such funny names out of context, strange and also kind of amusing, and we spent some time debating what they might be like.
None of us, not in our darkest nightmares, could have imagined Jar Jar.

kittybot will remember. The old Decipher Buzz- that was us, back in the day, till they wised up to the fact that we were roleplaying and booted us off. (And there was all this controversy, and while spent hanging around a chatroom, and then a series of free BBSes until Beth bought a domain and put her own boards together- Gods, what a nightmare that was. I tried to learn CGI to help Beth figure stuff out, and... ugh. What a nightmare.)

Current Online Fandom: Star Wars (yep, it's retro), Babylon 5, Alias, Harry Potter, seaQuest DSV.
First Fandom Crush: Oh, wow. Um... okay. Fine. You had to ask, didn't you? Lucas Wolenczek from seaQuest; though it was more the actor than the character, who I recall bothered me a lot. (Jonathan Brandis. Killed himself last year. He was about 25. Pretty sad.)
Current Fandom Crush: Marcus Cole (B5) and Severus Snape (HP).
First Fanfic Pairing You Wrote: Jean-Luc Picard/Beverly Crusher. It was bad, too. But I still really like the pairing. Have never been able to write it, though. *shrug*
