Alias: 5xWhatever: The Horizon
Spoilers. Big, big, big spoilers.
My reactions, more or less in order:
Ew. Vaughn.
Oh good, he's just a drug-induced hallucination.
Peyton is a psycho. Lauren's back and she's brunette. Bleh. *yawn*
Jack with Syd's old rattle. Awwwwww.
Rene does cool things with knives. Go Rene.
Sloane lies. And lies, and lies, and lies some more.
Grace was married? How random.
Hahaha stupid dude, you're so fucked. Jack is going to kick your ass.
Ooh, a knife.
...and there goes the ear. I told you...
WTF is the Horizon, anyway?
Ew, more Vaughn. Yes, go away... Say good-bye, Syd.
Why does a part of me think Jack/Rene would be really cool?
...
...
That looked like- it can't be-
What the fuck, Irina?
It was IRINA?
...well, that explains the voice-changer.
...Oh shit oh SHIT, what is she up to this time?
Ooh, nice shot with that needle, Syd. Die, Peyton, die!
...Okay, she's running...
...Jack and Rene are running...
they're gonna...
...find her any second.
...The hell? Crib? Baby stuff?
Where's Syd?
Oh. Shit.
...boat. Big boat. Sailing off into the blue yonder...
Damn you, J.J. Abrams!
...Righto. Now that that's out of my system, a few more coherent comments.
I am so, so glad Vaughn is still dead. I know almost no one dies on Alias (except Francie and Lauren, but never mind them) but we've already done the "this person is dead/wait no they're not" thing a few times too many, and Syd's already been through it with her mother.
Peyton is seriously starting to bug me. I think it's the voice. She's so perky. And randomly killing people.
Speaking of, that guy at the CIA storage facility has to be the dumbest secret agent on the planet. You could, you know, turn around to see if it's in fact your buddy coming back to get something after he's left the office... No wonder he was baby-sitting dead agents' old files.
I was watching Jack when he asked Sloane if he had any way to get in contact with Dean's people. I'm pretty sure he knows Sloane is lying. My read on that is that he didn't give a damn if Sloane kept his secrets, as long as he leaned on those people anyway, but I could see this going in another direction, and Jack confronting him again in the APO men's room, this time for something he actually did.
I'd watch your back if I were you, Crazy Uncle Arvin.
Rene is cool. I'm not sure the gang ought to trust her, but she's cool. And she did call Jack when those people grabbed Syd.
Okay, enough of that. Let's hit the big one for this ep right now-
Irina.
Oh, Irina, Irina, what are you doing? I want to believe in you, damnit- I want to believe that however screwed up you are, however bad a parent you are, you do love your family, and your kids, and you're through playing games with them. I want to believe this. I want to believe that she's doing this for a reason, and that she isn't going to turn out to be ultimately evil.
Maybe it's because I'm a Snape fan, and just got burned badly this past summer by J.K. Rowling, but I'm wondering now if J.J Abrams and the others aren't setting up something similar with Irina, where she is going to turn out to be eeevile, and have been masterminding the thing all along. Part of me doesn't want to see that because I want her to have some good in her, and part of me doesn't want to see it because I think it's cheap, too cheap for her. I think she's more complicated than that, that almost everyone on this show is. I don't want my favorite character to be the exception.
Irina to me isn't meant to be pure evil- she's a grey character, and she needs to stay that way.
And if Abrams does something else, I suppose I'll be going off-canon for
irina_derevko in TM. Again.
Speaking of the last time he killed off someone I was fond of, the "one of these agents will not survive" thing? Kinda melodramatic, guys. But I'll grant you they've got to make us want to keep watching, since this is it for them, with the show being canceled and all. So. The faces went by pretty quick, but I saw: Rachel, Tom Grace, Jack, Marshall, Dixon... And possibly dear Crazy Uncle Arvin. Uh, guys? You do realize that's the whole cast minus Syd, yeah? If someone's gonna die, it pretty much has to be one of them.
That being said, I don't think it'll be Rachel or Tom. If they want to go out with a bang, as they said (oh haha, very funny, guys...) killing off someone we just met this season is not the way to go. So my money is on someone we've known a lot longer, and are likely more attached to. Dixon or Marshall are my bets, and I'm hoping for Dixon, because I love Marshall. Marshall is the one who's managed to somehow still remain innocent despite everything he's been through. JJ, you cannot kill the geek. Dixon... I like him, but if someone's gotta go...
Having just been smacked with the "one of your favorite characters may be eeevile" stick yet again, I'm not quite up to considering the possibility that the other one is the one who'll die. Because if Irina is the new Voldemort, and Jack dies... I will be sad. And annoyed. And pissed off. And write lots of fanfic ignoring these small bits of canon, because this is what I do.
Denial breeds fanfic. So does the phrase, "Well, that was dumb." (Followed, usually, by, "Great, thanks so much, canon. Now I'm gonna have to write around this, too.")
I am, however, absolutely thrilled to see Irina again. This being the last season, I was wondering if the end to season 4 would be the last we saw of her. Though it would've been a good end for her story- and I wonder now if it might've been better if it ended there. This new stuff worries me.
I care too much about the characters I love, sometimes, I think this is my biggest problem here.
And, somewhat randomly, a list of stuff I really hope they address before the series finale. *sniff*
-What the hell Irina is up to (this time)
-What the hell Prophet 5 is, and what they want (And yes, I did notice the bit in the preview about raiding Langley. Interesting...)
-Why exactly did Vaughnstalk Sydney make sure he got assigned as Sydney's handler?
-Nadia. She really needs to wake up and not be psycho zombie girl anymore.
-Sloane and his association with the Prophet 5 guys. Somebody's going to get killed here, I'm pretty sure of this. And I don't think it'll be Sloane. In the Aliasverse, two things will survive the apocalypse: roaches, and Arvin Sloane.
-Rene, and the guy who looked like her dad but wasn't her dad in the cryofreezer thingy. Popsicle!not!Rene's dad was very... Well, I didn't see it coming, that's for sure. Also, isn't she supposed to have killed the Turkish Minister of something or other? What's the story there?
-Rachel/Sark. I'd really like to see something relating to her dealing with the fact that the guy she hooked up with was, well, Sark. A few quips in the end of the last ep doesn't seem like enough to me.
-Oh, and speaking of Sark. This being the last season, we need to see him again a time or two. I almost miss Vaughn when he's around, because he could kick him around so well.
-Syd, please for the love of Gods, stop mourning Vaughn at some point. Yes, we know, he was the love of your life, and blah blah, but you'll "find each other" again. Please remember at some point that you are the strongest person on this show, hands down (okay, with the possible exception of your mother, who I've never seen break down as often as you do), and you really can live without this guy. You're gonna have to.
-Weiss. I miss Weiss. I want to see Weiss come back. It'd be cool if he were there when Nadia woke up. (I'm pretty sure the actor moved on to something else, but it's not like they'd need him again next season or anything...)
-A spyfamily reunion where a.) the world is not ending, b.) nobody is in federal custody, and c.) nobody is evil. This isn't totally necessary the way I think some of the other things on this list are, but it's my wishlist, so why not? They could go miniature golfing. :)
-What would be really cool, though, is if the show ended with Syd quitting the spy biz and going out to have something of a normal life with normal people. Raise the kid, bring her up on stories she probably won't believe about "back in the day when me and Daddy and Grandpa Jack and Auntie Nadia and everybody were spies..." ("Sure, Mom, and Grandma was a KGB spy, not a Lit teacher. Riiight.")
Okay, so this might not have been my most coherent fandom-related post (it may not be my most coherent post, straight up) but I blame it on the Psych I've been studying all damn day. That much of anything will make anybody a little crazy.
...Oh, and incidentally? ABC? No love for moving Alias to 10:00PM instead of 9:00 for the rest of the season. You suck. And I hate watching the eleven o'clock news, I'm used to the morons on the ten o'clock news, and I know when they've told me everything worth hearing and it's safe to turn them off. I have to watch all of the later news, and it's annoying.
Just so you know.
And on that note, I am going to bed. I still have three chapters of Psych to read over tomorrow, plus a couple more concepts I want toobsess over go over again, and I'm really, really tired.
edit: I'm an idiot. Just took out one of my tags, as it would kinda majorly spoil things on its own, and I'm not sure
g_shadowslayer has seen the ep yet. Sorry! Please don't kill me...
And in case anyone was wondering, I redid my default Syd local girl icon. The old one's been bugging me for a while.

And they had better not kill off Crazy Uncle Arvin, or I will hurt someone. So will Jack. ;)
And I'm actually glad they moved it where they did, because airing after Lost will give it better ratings than struggling against CSI on Thursday. WTF were they thinking?! Reruns of CSI beat practically everything else out there -- Alias could never compete...

Anyway, that was all I could think of, too, that she was after somebody who survived the Alliance purge of a couple years ago, and this really was the only way to get that info. I wasn't recording this ep (damnit, I am an idiot!) but I'm gonna pull out my season 1 DVDs after my final tomorrow and have a look at that map, see if I can see anything. It wouldn't be the first time the characters see something on a document that we don't, but I figure it's worth a look.
No, I don't want them to kill off Crazy Uncle Arvin either. He's just too much fun. I don't think he has the emotional impact they're looking for, anyway- too many people hate him. They'd seriously better not kill Jack, either, or I will hurt someone. As will Irina, of course. ;)
Hmm, that is a good point about not running it against CSI. I seriously do not know what they were smoking with that one. It's sort of annoying how they keep moving it, though- I'd just gotten used to where they'd moved it from last year... Of course, I love how they move it now too- oh sure, now they have a chance for better ratings, when no one at the network cares because it's canceled anyway. Argh.

Let me know if you see anything in that map!
