In which I make a scene at the mall, for a good cause
I should really update this thing more often. Now I'm left wondering where to start- Prisoner of Azkaban, the newest craziness from my relatives, or the fight I got into with a conservative right to lifer at the mall when I went shopping with Mom and my grandmother?
So, a week or so ago, the shopping. My uncle's wedding is going to be Hawaiian themed. We're supposed to wear Hawaiian shirts or something. I don't look good in Hawaiian shirts. Never have, never will.
Note to self: make uncle pay for this.
I wasn't feeling well, and shopping with Grandma tends to make me nuts. So by the time they hit the last store at the mall, I'd had it. I went to sit down, catch my breath, get away from them before I did something I'd regret. So I'm watching the people go by, and there's this one guy registering people to vote. Fine and well and good, I thought.
When the crowds died down he came over to me, asked if I was registered. I said I was, and he nodded, then told me I should vote for Bush. I was too stunned to say anything. So he walked off, hit up some other people, and told everyone who said they were registered that they should vote for Bush because he's a Christian.
There are these moments in my life when I feel like I should speak up, and I don't do it. And I hate myself for it. That was one of those moments, and I thought- no, I'm not doing this again. So I told him I didn't think it was right, him telling people who to vote for. Well, he got very annoyed, and told me he was expressing his right to free speech, blah blah blah.
And I was willing to let it go at that point. I thought he was a bit of a fanatic, but whatever, you know? Then he goes on to tell me that Bush is the best candidate, because he is a Christian, and doesn't believe in abortion. All of these other candidates are *gasp* pro-choice.
And that was it. I was tired, I was in pain, I was annoyed, and then he made me mad.
"So am I."
And from that point it was on. He yelled at me and told me it was a sin, the babies were innocent, didn't deserve- ect, ect. And I said that was fine, but what about the mothers?
Guy looks at me, blinks. "What do you mean, what about the mothers?"
All the rational arguments went through my head- the obvious stuff like rape and incest and medical issues- but I couldn't get the words out, I was too angry. And thinking back on it I figure that he probably wouldn't have been convinced by anything I had to say. So I was like, I don't have to sit here and listen to this, I'm out of here. Got up and stormed off. He was screaming at me by the time I got out of range.
I wandered around the store for a while, getting annoyed when I couldn't find Mom and Grandma, still shaking with anger and adrenaline. So I whipped out my cell phone and called Mom. She and Grandma came to meet me, I explained what had happened, and we waltzed out of the store right past my new friend.
I know I complain about my grandmother a lot, and she really can be a pain, but she was really cool that day. She and Mom both were.
We looked for the guy yesterday when we went to the mall to eat before the movie, but he wasn't there. I was so looking forward to introducing him to my mother, too. :)
Next up: Azkaban.
