Aagh. I can imagine it being unbearable, facing all those people at school but refusing to know any of them. I'm coming to terms with how to go about friends at school or not myself.... But something I've figured out is this:
All my friends are pretty unique people. They've all made choices that make them individuals, and those choices tend to alienate them/us from the majority of people in our areas. Yet, though we love being unique, we demand to be surrounded by people who are like us, who can share our likes and dislikes and interests and dreams and hopes and goals and pursuits, and are always disappointed to find that people like that really just don't exist.
But the friends of mine who have gone off to college and have been most successful in finding friends are those who have lowered their standards, if you will, and don't demand much of the people they've befriended. It's a tradeoff, how badly you want people to get along with, and how great of friends they're going to be. You can have fun with people who really aren't like you, but it won't make you that much happier when they're not around. Is it worth it? Sometimes I think it is.
