Merciless

Taking a break from watching the Indy 500, occasionally beating eBay with a stick because it keeps telling me there is no Babylon 5 stuff listed (as I scroll through 33 pages worth of stuff...), liking that it is Sunday for once. I'm bored but basically happy; no school stress or finals, and I don't even have to see my crazy family until tomorrow.

And very slowly I dig myself out from under the very large list of stuff I need to get done this summer, or at least that I really want to- webpages and fics, books I want to read, boxes and corners of my room infested with junk, which I need to clean out. Not that I'm really looking forward to the cleaning, but it's got to be done. I'll feel better when it is, anyway.

One thing I am considering moving to the top of the list is a Harry Potter fic I have half-promised myself will be done before Order of the Phoenix is out. I really don't want anything from OoP to influence the fic, even if half of it ends up invalidated by said book. AU has never scared me.

Of course, I don't know that it's going to be done by next month; I'm at this point where I'm torn between really liking the fic and really hating it.

Maybe a beta reader would help? Lindsay did really well on Emerald & Ebony for me, but she's busy, and I impose on her too much. Getting me out of javascript and HTML messes should be enough to ask, even of my 'sister'.

But then I get to thinking that no, I don't need a beta reader. I need some self-confidence, and some objectivity. I keep telling myself, you can write, and you can edit. Be merciless, I think, over and over again. Be merciless. Cut the words you don't need, the ones that really don't work.

I am the best and worst editor I'll ever have, anyway. Because I am merciless. Just not merciless enough.
